A new place-based research programme will put university partnerships at the centre of regional investment plans. The fictional call asks institutions to develop a shared programme with local authorities and business partners, rather than submit separate bids for unrelated projects.

The programme will support collaborations between at least two universities in the same region. Applicants must show how the proposed research addresses a locally identified need and explain how partners will share facilities, staff and the results of the work.

Awards will run for three years, with a review after the first twelve months. Funding can cover research staff, specialist equipment access and coordination costs, but applicants must distinguish those costs from investment in new buildings or general university operations.

Research offices are being advised to agree governance arrangements before submitting an expression of interest. The assessment panel will consider the quality of the research, the strength of the partnership and whether the proposed benefits can be measured over the lifetime of the award.

Full call guidance will set out the timetable, eligible costs and reporting requirements. The organisers plan to hold a joint briefing for potential applicants before the first deadline, with written answers to questions made available to every participating institution.
